The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has suspended all maintenance activities as contingency measure to ensure uninterrupted power service during the May 12 elections.

NGCP government relations and regional affairs lead specialist Jenny Afroilan confirmed this on Friday as she reported that “construction and non-critical maintenance activities near substations and transmission lines are temporarily suspended from May 5-16, 2025.”

“The suspension of all maintenance activities is in line with contingency plans set by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the upcoming national and local elections on May 12,” she said.

Since April, all transmission lines were cleared of vegetation and obstructions, except for one line in South Luzon because the scheduled vegetation trimming along the said line is still being negotiated with the landowner, the NGCP said.

“NGCP is strictly following its contingency measures and coordinating with concerned groups to ensure a power interruption-free election, especially during the crucial periods prescribed by the Comelec,” the grid operator said.

Maintenance activities of power plants were also adjusted to ensure their availability during election day.

A day before May 12, the NGCP said in an advisory that it will activate the 24/7 operations of its Overall Command Center until May 14, 2025 to respond in case of line trippings. (PNA)
