The national and local elections in the Bicol Region concluded smoothly, the Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) said on Monday evening.

In an interview, PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon said the situation in the region was “manageable and stable,” as he attributed the outcome to the wide-ranging preparations and coordinated efforts of all security forces.

“All security forces, from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Philippine National Police are on guard and ready to respond to any untoward incident,” he said.

Dizon said the success of this election was due to dedicated officers, partner agencies, and the public.

The official said the strict implementation of the gun ban was crucial in maintaining order and minimizing risks during the election period.

Additionally, a total of 26,482 checkpoints screened potential threats and enforced election-related regulations.

Despite the generally peaceful outcome, isolated incidents were recorded, including vote-buying in Camarines Sur.

Voting experience

Raymund Marcaida, 34, a voter from Daraga, Albay, said it was a good thing he went to the precinct early and avoided the huge crowds.

Marcaida said everything was orderly, especially with the help of poll watchers who guided voters.

Edgar Saladaga, 49, from Homapon, Legazpi City, Albay, commended the Commission on Elections for facilitating a smoother voting experience.

He suggested that groups such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWD), and solo parents should be allowed to cast their ballots online in future elections.

Saladaga also urged senators who will win in the elections to deliver genuine public service that will prioritize an increase in social pensions for senior citizens, improved hospitalization, higher salaries, better healthcare, and equal benefits for vulnerable sectors.

Allen Bruce, a senior citizen from Bato, Catanduanes, expressed support for the proposal to allow earlier voting times for vulnerable groups.

“It’s a good idea because long lines can put seniors, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women at risk. The voting machines are user-friendly, allowing you to simply insert the paper. In some areas, there are glitches and malfunctions, but our Commission on Elections can learn from these issues and improve the system,” he remarked.

Jesus Alejo, 45, of Legazpi City, Albay, called on future lawmakers to prioritize laws that would provide regular monthly pensions for PWDs.

Jared Bulatao, a 23-year-old nurse from Bigaa, Legazpi City, said he traveled 15 hours from Cavite province to cast his vote in his hometown.

“It’s important for me to vote because it is our constitutional right,” he said.

Bulatao expressed joy at seeing a large crowd at the polling station despite the heat.

“It’s heartening to see so many people lining up to vote because it shows that choosing our leaders is something Filipinos truly value,” he added.

Bulatao said he hopes that winning candidates will give more attention to improving the country’s healthcare system. (PNA)
